With two goals from Merih Demir, Turkey defeated Austria 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.
Turkey, which has been performing decently in Euro 2024 held in Germany, has reached the Euro quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years.
In the match held at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Tuesday, Demir scored in the first minute of the game to give Turkey an early lead. He doubled Turkey’s lead with his second goal in the 59th minute.
In the 66th minute, Austria’s Michael Gregoritsch scored, attempting to bring Austria back into the game. However, with no additional goals scored, Turkey secured their place in the last 8.
Austria, which topped their group that included teams like France and the Netherlands, had planned to achieve similar results in the knockout stage but failed to do so.
Turkey will now play against the Netherlands for a spot in the semifinals.
